Knitting Up a Storm at our Fundraising Event

Learning from the expertise of our older members, raising money to keep our services flourishing, having a good chat over a cuppa and putting the world to rights: these are just some of the benefits of our ‘Caring Knitting Cuppa’ event. Our aim was to knit a scarf, either as a Christmas gift or to keep ourselves warm; but as long as everyone had fun, our main goal was achieved.

There was much hilarity as the younger members of the knitting party failed at the first hurdle - trying to cast on. It didn’t really catch on. If it wasn’t for the wise counsel of our regular client Betty, who has been a knitter for years and is currently engaged in creative projects within her wider community, the two girls might still be stuck on their first row ...

The festive spirit was everywhere and our chat covered many topics in an hour, from celebrity TV shows to childhood memories. It was also something of a family affair, with a mother and daughter, and a gran and grandaughter, meeting up online in a safe environment. Time just sped by too quickly. It would be lovely to revisit the idea with a similar event in 2021 - hopefully face to face.

Held mid-December, it formed part of our ‘A Caring Cuppa’ campaign that has run from June 2020 and will end on January 31st. Our Christmas campaign, ‘Give the Gift of Friendship’, formed an important part of this work and the knitting event tied everything together nicely. The festive season is behind us but our clients are living in isolation around the Greater Glasgow area. There is still time to donate at https://www.befriend.org.uk/donate.
