Our Story

Founded in 2016 by Audrey Mutongi-Darko, The No. 1 Befriending Agency has been tackling loneliness among older adults in Greater Glasgow. Through one-to-one befriending and group activities, it has supported hundreds of individuals, fostered meaningful community connections, and created a lasting social impact.

Each hour of befriending provided by our volunteers has played a crucial role in helping both isolated older adults and our dedicated volunteers lead fuller, happier lives.

In its first year, the agency supported over 150 older adults, delivering more than 1,500 hours of befriending. Thanks to the enthusiasm of 83 trained volunteers, the agency was honoured with the Volunteer Friendly Award in 2017.

By 2019, we were supporting over 300 older adults, providing more than 3,100 hours of service. Feedback from our clients showed the transformative impact of our work, with 100% reporting reduced loneliness. To strengthen these connections further, we launched Cup of Friendship events, bringing communities closer together.

The pandemic posed unprecedented challenges, but we adapted swiftly, introducing virtual events and the Reminiscing Project. These initiatives kept over 85 participants connected during a time of heightened isolation. Volunteer numbers grew to 130, contributing nearly 4,000 hours of service. Despite the difficulties, 40% of clients reported feeling less lonely.

Recognition followed, with awards including the prestigious Quality in Befriending Award. Clients shared stories of improved health, with 50% attributing this to the social interactions we helped foster. With additional funding, we expanded our reach even further.

In 2022, we launched the Heritage Project, celebrating community wellbeing through the power of storytelling. This year saw us supporting over 400 older adults with 5,500 hours of service, while 75 volunteers embraced leadership training, taking on vital roles within the organisation.

Innovation has always been at the heart of what we do. From introducing a digital platform to streamline communication and scheduling to hosting our first-ever No. 1 Befriending Day—which welcomed over 300 participants—we continue to find new ways to make a difference. An impact assessment showed that 95% of our clients feel happier and more connected, a testament to the positive impact we strive to deliver.

Over the past eight years, The No. 1 Befriending Agency has become a cornerstone of the Greater Glasgow community, empowering older adults to feel valued, supported, and connected. With your support, we look forward to continuing this journey, one connection at a time.
