“I am proud to be a champion of social connectedness online” - Hear from Brenda, one of our Digital Champions

Meet our volunteer, Brenda, a student at Glasgow University, who is one of our Digital Champions in her spare time. As part of the Connecting Scotland program, our clients were given digital devices which they can use for example to connect to our events or anything else they wish to. This is where our Digital Champion volunteers come in.

What are the main things you do as a Digital Champion?

In my role as a digital champion, I assist new and existing clients with setting up their devices, or with technical difficulties as they arise. Before each session, I call clients to confirm whether they need assistance logging in or locating the Zoom link. My role is to make their digital experience as seamless as possible. I also attend the sessions on Wednesdays and there are always fun activities to take part in for each session.

What do you like most about being a Digital Champion?

It’s been rewarding talking to the clients, hearing if they have any challenges with the digital aspect of things, and helping them accordingly. I also look forward to talking to them prior to each session and just chatting with them and hearing how their day is going.

What impact have you made using your skills as a Digital Champion?

Over the time I have been a digital champion, I believe the clients have become more confident in using technology to remain connected. I also appreciate that when challenges do arise, they are open to sharing them with me so I can help them. Personally, this experience has helped me become a better communicator, as I listen to clients’ needs and effectively communicate solutions.

What has been the best thing to happen as a Digital Champion?

It makes me happy to know that I have helped in some way and made the clients’ digital experience better. I have witnessed how happy the clients are for the chance to socialize and take part in the sessions. It is truly making a difference, particularly during the pandemic where social interactions have been limited (especially for people who are older), and I am grateful to be a part of this community.

Is there one quote to sum up your role as a Digital Champion?

I am proud to be a champion of social connectedness online for the elderly.
